After a troubled year in school, sixteen-year-old Beth Parker is sent to spend the summer in Mexico with her godmother, Dr. Lucia Delgado, a noted archaeologist. At first Beth resents her ‘exile’, but after she makes friends and saves a baby armadillo, she names Chema, she adjusts to her new surroundings and learns the value of another culture. The voyage of self-discovery is an epiphany to Beth, and in the process, she contributes to an important archaeological find.
